THE PIG
A stone country house at golden hour behind its kitchen garden and potting shed

Nine PIGs. Nine very different patches.

Restaurants with hotels attached, in the New Forest, on the beach, near Bath, in the Cotswolds, the South Downs, Devon, Kent and Cornwall. Everything on the menu was grown within 25 miles, most of it outside the window.

Nine PIGs, from Padstow to Canterbury.

Each one is a house with a kitchen garden and a 25-mile menu. No two are the same and none of them are grand.

Why there is a hotel at all

The kitchen garden came first. The bedrooms are so you can stay for breakfast.

Every PIG has a head gardener, a greenhouse and a walled or fenced garden that feeds the restaurant. What the garden cannot grow comes from within 25 miles: the boats at Swanage and Padstow, the New Forest deer, the Kent vineyards. The menu is a conversation between the gardener and the chef at 11 o'clock each morning.

Tuck Up & Tuck In on a Tuesday: the room, three courses and breakfast for less than dinner alone costs in London. The garden walk with Ollie was the highlight.

Lovely Comfy room over the deer park. Dinner was superb, breakfast slightly slow on a full Sunday. Would absolutely go back midweek.

Two nights in the shepherd's hut above Studland Bay in February. Wood-burner, outdoor bath, Old Harry Rocks in the fog. The best thing we have done in years.
